Teardrop Tattoo

He’s a recent graduate
of Cal State Centinela,
with a litany of felonies
under one umbrella.
He’s crossing off the numbers
of the CA penal code.
He’s updating his epitaph
with every episode.

There was burglary and forgery,
arson, theft, and robbery,
receiving stolen property,
and assault and battery.
They liked him for a murder rap,
but they couldn’t make it stick.
They didn’t have a witness
or a statement from the vic.

They discharged him from high school
with dishonorable mention.
He got his education
in juvenile detention.
He doesn’t have a problem
with getting down and dirty.
He doesn’t think he’ll make it
to the other side of thirty.

The odds were stacked against him
and they’re only getting longer.
The options on the table
are only wrong or wronger.
It’s a foregone conclusion
he’ll be back in the clink.
The only sign of his remorse
is a teardrop made of ink.
