Whatever we’re appraising
receives a very high score.

This one is stupendous
and that one is fantastic.
Everything’s tremendous.
We’re so enthusiastic.

The terror of rejection
creates the expectation
of uniform perfection
and constant acclamation.
From the time they wean us
exception is the rule.
So if you’re not a genius
then you must be a fool.

You must be off the scale
or you are doomed to fail.
You have to be superlative
or else you don’t deserve to live.
And if you don’t excel
you’re going straight to hell.

It isn’t win or lose.
It isn’t all or none.
You do not have to choose
to worship number one.

When scores are stratospheric
and means exceed the ways,
we doom with panegyric
and damn with brazen praise.
If everything is heavenly
and nothing is mundane,
if everything is sacred,
then nothing is profane.

If you’re living the dream,
you’re living a lie.
Don’t be extreme.
Don’t reach for the sky.
Be who you are,
not an ideal.
Don’t be a star.
Just try to be real.
