GLOSSARY

bathysphere: a spherical deep-sea diving apparatus

benthic zone: the lowest ecological region of a body of water, such as the ocean floor

Davy Jones: as in Davy Jones’ locker, the resting place of drowned sailors at the bottom of the sea (not the singer from the Monkees)

dodo: an extinct flightless bird

FOMO: fear of missing out

Kuiper belt: a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune, believed to contain many comets, asteroids, and other small bodies made largely of ice

Moho (short for Mohorovičić discontinuity): the boundary between the crust and the mantle of the earth

Oort cloud: a spherical mass of more than 100 billion comets that makes up the outer edge of the solar system, surrounding the Kuiper belt and the planets

pogo: a toy for jumping, consisting of a long, spring-loaded pole with a handle at the top and rests for the feet near the bottom (invented by Max Pohlig and Ernst Gottschall)

vampire squid: (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), a deep-sea creature
